Growing up in the 80s and 90s I wasn’t the biggest fan of the horror genre like I am now. Why? Well, I was a kid and I was scared! While I could still watch most of the movies there were two that for some reason scared the crap out of me that I downright refused to watch. One was Freddy Krueger (a cardboard cutout at the comic shop I went to as a child may have traumatized the young kindergarten Mark) and the other was Candyman (don’t say it five times). I swore he was going to show up behind me in the mirror and get me. Anyways…
As time passed I obviously watched the movies and rank them high in the genre. With the successful Halloween sequel and a rumored Friday the 13th reboot on the horizon, Jordan Peele (who has done an amazing job the past couple years) has taken the production role on the “sequel” to Candyman, and they have found their lead. According to Variety, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in talks to star in the Jordan Peele-produced film. On board to direct is Little Woods‘ writer and director Nia DaCosta.
Coming off of his strong role playing Black Manta in Aquaman, I think Abdul-Mateen II will be a great fit for the role. Like Halloween, they are taking the extended sequel route:
“The studio is touting the upcoming film as a “spiritual sequel” to the original. It will return to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood. The original ‘Candyman’ was released in 1992 and follows a graduate student who explores the legend of Candyman while writing a thesis on urban legends.”
