Jordan Peele’s Us Isn’t About Race

When I finished watching the trailer for Jordan Peele’s upcoming film Us, I couldn’t help but wonder one thing: What is this movie actually about? Of course, it’s about a family overcoming some incredibly frightening home invaders, but given these invaders are THEM, you can’t help but wonder who they are meant to represent.

This is also a film that comes from Jordan Peele, whose first film, Get Out, was a huge piece of social commentary. The film very much spoke to many African-Americans, and what it feels like to be black in our country. In the past, Peele himself discussed his desire to do more “social commentary horror.” So what does this mean for Us? What’s the metaphor? Does it have to do with race? The simple answer is no, as Peele revealed to THR.

“Very important for me was to have a black family at the center of a horror film. But it’s also important to note, unlike Get Out, Us is not about race. It is instead about something that I feel has become an undeniable truth. And that is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies.”

“I dedicated a lot of myself to create a new horror mythology and a new monster,” Peele said. “I think that monsters and stories about monsters are one of our best ways of getting at deeper truths and facing our fears as a society.”

So, rather than create something that speaks mostly to the African-American population, it looks like Peele opted to expand his message to all of humanity. But, as he mentioned, it was very important for him to have a black family at the center, which is largely uncommon. More often than not, when you have films that don’t center around the racial identity of a character, they tend to default to white, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was Peele’s way of rebelling against that trend.

What do you think? Does the film look terrifying, and are you happy to see him go for a message that isn’t racial in nature? Sound off down below!
