Jurassic World 2 Kicks Off With Monstrous $150M Debut

This weekend saw the release of just one major film — Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Unsurprisingly, the dino-sequel took in a hefty sum in its opening weekend — $150M, in fact, as early estimates show. Without a doubt, this is a very strong start for a film that many folks already seem to dislike, if you’re to believe a lot of the online chatter. Of course, if you compare it to the massive $208.8M the first film brought in a few years back, this doesn’t seem like a whole lot, but it’s worth mentioning that that performance was completely unexpected. This $150M seems to be a much more fitting performance for the franchise, and given that it’s already made $711.5M worldwide, it’s already made quite the hefty profit. When all said and done, this one will likely skew closer to $1 billion than the first one (which broke $1.6Bn), and while that may seem like this trend shows the end of the franchise, there is no denying the cash brought in has more than made its investors plenty happy.

In second place is Incredibles 2, taking in $80.9M in its second weekend, dropping 55% from its opening weekend. It’s an admirable second weekend, considering the juggernaut that is Jurassic World, and it proves that there was a big enough audience for both films. As of this writing, Incredibles 2 is outpacing Finding Dory in terms of domestic haul at $350.4M (compared to Dory‘s $286.3M). But will its foreign haul actually compare to that of Dory‘s? This will ultimately make the difference in whether or not the film will overtake its counterpart. As of right now, Incredibles 2 has a lot of other countries it still needs to open in, so it’s still a waiting game.

In third place, we have Ocean’s 8, which nabbed an additional $11.6M in its third weekend, dropping only 38.6 percent from its second. It’s made just north of $100M domestically and over $170.9M worldwide. Given its $70 million budget, it looks like it’s either already broken even and is in profitable territory, or is well on its way.
