Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom And Incredibles 2 Stay On Top At Box-Office

This past weekend saw the wide release of the sports/comedy Uncle Drew and Sicario: Day of the Soldado — though neither managed to crack the top two at the box-office.

In first place, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom repeated its success for a second weekend. It dropped just shy of 60% from its first weekend, making $60M. As of this writing, it is less than $70 million away from cracking the almighty billion-dollar-club, and I expect it to do so in the weekend to come. Given the film’s $170 million budget, it’s safe to say it’s made more than enough money to justify the investment for the studio, even if it wasn’t incredibly well received, and even if it won’t be approaching the $1.6 Bn haul of the first Jurassic World.

In second place, Incredibles 2 sticks close to Jurassic World with a $45.5M haul. It’s made north of $645 million worldwide, and has officially passed up the entire box-office run of its predecessor, which is no small feat. But will the movie actually be able to crack $1 Bn and join the likes of Finding Dory? I would have imagined so, but it’s very hard to gauge the foreign response, as virtually every territory out there is different in its tastes and trends.

At No. 3, we have Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the follow-up film (not sequel, as I’ve been reminded by the studio) to the 2015 film Sicario, which starred Emily Blunt. This film follows Benicio del Toro’s character, Alejandro, and goes into much darker territory. This movie made $19.0M in its opening weekend, surpassing the first film’s $12M opening.
