Taking a break from basking in the glory of the success of Black Panther, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige spoke with Vulture and finally gave some insight into the leaked set photo from last month showing a very different Captain Marvel costume. Feige also address the problems the studio can face when filming out in public.
“If you want to film out in public — and Captain Marvel has a lot of scenes that will be shot on location — it’s gonna happen. Most people are savvy enough to know they’re looking at a behind-the-scenes photo, completely out of context. So we don’t do things like rush photos. We released some concept art of her with different colors. People online have correctly identified what’s going on there.”

With set photos, context looms large as mentioned by Feige.
When the photo leaked, fans weren’t very pleased with what was shown. They were confused and likely somewhat disappointed as the image showed Brie Larson donning colors not traditionally associated with the character. Of course, the costume shown in the photo is probably just a precursor to the more familiar red and blue the character is known to wear.
Captain Marvel is currently in production and hits theaters March 2019.
