The amazingness of David Bowie in the classic family film Labyrinth can never be replicated, but that’s not to say more stories can’t be told within the world established. Of course, Hollywood being Hollywood, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. We’ll be getting another film in the years to come, and while they’ll be set in this world, they won’t be featuring the Goblin King, thank goodness.
But given just how iconic the film has become since its release in the 1980s, what is the actual chance of it coming out? Well, director Fede Álvarez, who is developing the movie in hopes of directing it, recently sat down with the outlet Fandango to discuss the status of the project, and it looks like it’s actually making some progress:
“I was actually having lunch yesterday with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project. We’re very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can’t tell you much more about it… but we have a script, and we’re very excited about it so we’ll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they’re larger than life. But that’s one of the projects that I’m very excited about.”

As I stated above, given the love that folks in my generation have for the movie, the prospect of it actually getting made feels like something akin to The Crow (i.e., it feels like it can never happen), but Álvarez seems optimistic:
“You never know, and really right now, I’m just finishing with this film so I’m not even thinking about what I’m going to do next. But all I can tell you is that I had lunch with her yesterday and it was great.”
Álvarez just finished up work on The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and with that behind him, he may have more work to devote to this…but he may also be interested in looking more into Don’t Breathe 2, so we’ll wait and see.
