Leonardo DiCaprio Was Scared To Use The Flamethrower In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

While Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will likely go down in history as Quentin Tarantino’s most laid-back and least violent movie, that’s not to say it was completely devoid of the stuff. In the film, there were a couple of sequences wherein the main character, Rick Dalton, sets some people on fire using a flamethrower. One such sequence was part of one of the trailers for the film.

In the trailer scene, Dalton’s character cries out with glee, asking if anyone ordered fried sauerkraut before pulling the trigger and setting the whole world on fire. What followed was a psychotic and malevolent laugh. But as it turns out, DiCaprio was anything but thrilled to set anyone on fire.

Speaking with HuffPo, the film’s stunt coordinator Robert Alonzo said:

“Leo was not very gung-ho with all the flamethrower stuff. Literally, he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. And I completely understood it. Normally you use a stunt person in that spot to be able to manage firing a flamethrower at somebody. When I did Tropic Thunder, Nick Nolte [accidentally] fired a flamethrower at me…This time, [Leo] is actually lighting them up and holding a flame to them for about seven to eight seconds as the flamethrower is traversing back and forth around eight guys that he’s never met. That is psychologically difficult to do, so kudos to him on being able to stay in character and do that scene.”

Luckily, it all worked out. They got the shots they needed, and no one was hurt in the process. And, from what I’ve heard from other viewers, those scenes turned out to be the most memorable in the film, so it was a concern worth overcoming.
