Limited Series Based On The Book Console Wars Coming From Jordan Vogt-Roberts

Just as today the majority of gamers are split between Xbox and Playstation, such was the case in the early days of home consoles. Back then, a kid usually had either a Nintendo or a Sega Genesis (of course some lucky kids had both). The rivalry between the two companies was strong during the height of the era and now fans will be getting a limited series based on a 2015 book written by Blake Harris titled Console Wars.

Director of Kong Skull Island, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, is set to direct all episodes of the series with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg producing (the pair were originally going to write and direct the series back in 2014 but they have since taken a step back). The series has yet to find a network to call home.

I was a Nintendo kid back then, Sega was completely alien to me at the time, of course I played the games at friends’ houses who were on the other side of the console aisle, but it never really stuck with me, I will always take Mario and Luigi over Sonic (taking nothing away from Sonic, it was a fun game). I am absolutely going to take in all the nostalgia this series appears to be bringing forth, and I’m fairly certain many of you will as well.

Below you can read a synopsis of the book the upcoming series is based on.

“In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.

The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.

Based on over two hundred interviews with former Sega and Nintendo employees, Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It’s the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.”
