Logan Noir Trailer Expresses A More Somber, Contemplative Vision

A black-and-white cut of James Mangold’s brilliant and final Wolverine film, titled simply Logan Noir, is coming to select theaters for one night only; the special edition will be on available on 4K and Blue-Ray next week. Today, Comicbook.com released a trailer for this special edition, and it is grim, powerful stuff.

There aren’t any new or extended scenes evident in this trailer, but the monochromatic palette brings out details and texture that may not have been apparent before. Opening with the same Johnny Cash song from the original theatrical, full-color trailer, these scenes of Logan (Hugh Jackman) sweating, straining, and suffering somehow evokes an even darker and more melancholy mood (if that’s even possible).

As a military veteran who is edging-up in years myself, Logan resonated with me at a deep, deep level (judging by the film’s box office performance, I’m not alone). Seeing an aging Jackman with shaking hands, lined face, and graying beard is heartbreaking; for laughs, watch the trailer for the original Bryan Singer X-Men from 2000 — the intervening years have not been particularly kind to Jackman.

Interestingly, the Logan Noir trailer contains little action, instead it just lingers over the many themes explored in film, including: resistance to changing times, denial of one’s limitations, and reflections upon a life not lived. Logan is ultimately a redemption story, which is incredibly well-served by the black-and-white photography. If you haven’t seen Logan yet, this sure looks like an epic way to experience the final go-around with Jackman’s career-defining anti-hero.

Is the Logan Noir edition the ultimate version of the film for you or are you sticking with the color edition? Let us know in the comments down below!

Logan Noir hits theaters on May 16, 2017 and available via Blu-Ray on May 23, 2017.
