We knew the avalanche was coming. We’re less than half a year away from the release of the newly-named Logan, the third film in the Wolverine franchise that started with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and continued in The Wolverine a few years later. Ever since it was announced that there would be a third Wolverine film, there was speculation that it would be based on Old Man Logan, the fan favorite graphic novel that had an aged Wolverine traveling across the U.S. in a dystopian future.

While the recently-released poster and title for Logan don’t necessarily confirm that they’ll be adapting Old Man Logan, it seems to at least hint that they’ll at least be taking some inspiration from it. A new scoop courtesy of TheWrap seems to confirm the connection.

This goes without saying, if you don’t want Logan to be spoiled for you, don’t read ahead.

According to TheWrap report, Logan will take place in the year 2024, and it will be the darkest X-Men film to date.

The report continued:

“Old Man Logan is in full effect. Logan looks bad, and drinks a lot. For work, he drives a 2024 Chrysler 300 limo that looks modified in the front to look more futuristic. He’s sick, his powers are fading, and he heals much more slowly — and sometimes not at all.”

They then go on to say that the hand in the poster belongs to that of a young girl — a mutant to be exact.

“In 2024, mutant births are severely in decline, and people aren’t sure why. We find out about a government-type operation called ‘Transigen’ that is turning mutant children into killing machines. Logan ends up mentoring the girl, who has two claws instead of his three.”

This scoop is definitely huge for fans of X-23, a mutant who was the 23rd clone (and only success) ofWolverine, and who, in 2015 adopted the moniker of Wolverine in the comic All-New Wolverine. The presence of X-23 is one of the many rumors that’s been permeating the web, and should this report hold true, it’ll be a welcome treat for fans.

It can also be a potential out for Fox, who, following this film, won’t necessarily have access to good ol’ Hugh Jackman. They have to replace their cash cow somehow, right? We’ll see if she’s a worthy substitute.

The last part of the rumor has to do with Professor X, who apparently has seen much better days:

“There’s more. Professor X (Patrick Stewart) is old and not well. His powers are unstable and at times he doesn’t even remember Logan. Stephen Merchant plays the Albino mutant Caliban, who helps Logan take care of Professor X.”

As we know, this film will likely also trumpet the last time Patrick Stewart plays the iconic Professor X, so there’s little doubt this may be the most emotional X-Men film to date.

This rumor definitely does have me curious about the timeline, though — namely in its connection to X-Men: Days of Future Past, a movie that took place in an unnamed year in the future. From the way it played out, it seemed very clear that that was waaay in the future. However, if this film only takes place in 2024, I wonder how it is that Logan is an old man — especially since he wasn’t especially aged in Days of Future Past. Yes, I know that that’s an alternate timeline, but one still has to assume there’s some sort of correlation between the two timelines in terms of aging — unless I’m forgetting something.
