LRM EXCLUSIVE: Alita: Battle Angel – Star Tells Us Why The Eyes Are So Big

Alita: Battle Angel is a movie that was in production purgatory for a long time. I can remember hearing rumors about this as far back as 2003. However it is finally here, or at least it will be next week. The movie is set to be a visual stunner, and early reactions are positive, but one thing has stood out since the very first shots were seen… Alita’s eyes.

Rosa Salazar plays the titular hero of the film and recently spoke with LRM and gave us an exclusive answer as to why her characters eyes are so big. Here’s what she had to say:

“Alita is otherworldly. She isn’t like anyone else from Iron City. She comes from Mars. So you need a thing to separate her from other people. The other reason is that, you know, the eyes are the windows to the soul, and we need to be there and seeing her emotion and we need to really, really see how things are effecting her. There’s no better way to do that than to make her eyes much bigger.”

She goes on to say that she feels the look is taken straight from the manga and that the movie is also seen through the eyes of Alita.

In a movie with robots, augmented humans, and other science fiction tropes I have no issues with her eyes being bigger than the other characters. The why isn’t really important so long as it looks good and the story is good. I can appreciate Salazar’s take on the reasoning though. I am not sure how many other characters will be from other planets in this film, but that’s an easy and logical explanation. Also, it’s not uncommon for filmmakers to put metaphors, allusions, and other artistic properties in their films and using the big eyes as “windows to the soul” is believable. Or, they did it to make it look like the source material.

How do you feel about the look of Alita? Are you excited to see this film? Let us know in the comments below!
