LRM Exclusive: Drew Goddard Incorporated Music Into The Script And On Set Of Bad Times At The El Royale

Film is a fantastic medium (says the guy who runs a site largely about film and TV — big surprise there, right?). One of the best parts about the medium is the way it integrates other forms of art — cinematography, writing, acting, music, and much more — to create a narrative. Quite often, however, the use of music is usually in service of the story as a whole and doesn’t always get to stand out in a big way.

When it comes to big budget Hollywood productions, the music is often meant simply to enhance the story. There are some filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino are well known for their ability to create scenes that transcend even music videos, and while I can’t confirm if that’s the case in the upcoming film Bad Times at the El Royale from writer-director Drew Goddard, it sounds like music was integral in its use in the film, as revealed by actors Lewis Pullman and Jeff Bridges to our own Gig Patta:

Pullman: [Writer and director Drew Goddard], within the script, has each of the songs he knows he wants where he wants them, so when I read it I was listening to the songs when I went along.

Bridges: I did it too, I did that same thing!

Pullman: Yeah, and it’s a great way to set the tone. And then on set, Drew’s playing these songs over the loudspeakers.

I love the sound of this. Call me a weak-willed ham, but there are few things more rewarding than when the cut of a film or the stride of a character matches up perfectly with the soundtrack. As someone with a weak imagination, it gives me another way to enjoy a song, and another great scene to show off to my friends.

Edgar Wright proved last year once again how important music can be so important to a movie, and while I don’t expect that level of integration, I expect more than your average film.
