LRM EXCLUSIVE: The Punisher’s Jon Bernthal On What Season 2 Tackles

In just a fews days, the second season of Marvel’s The Punisher will premiere on Netflix to an eager and loyal fandom. Loved by its audience and fan base (8.6 on IMDb and a 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes), producers Jeph Loeb, Joe Quesada and the entire production perfectly adapted the Frank Castle character and his story, first in Daredevil season two and then in the character’s first season of his solo series. Jon Bernthal (The Walking DeadThe Wolf Of Wall StreetFury) seamlessly embodies the vengeful and violent Marine-turned-vigilante. So much so it’s as if he was born to play the role.

Recently, Bernthal sat down with LRM to talk about what he feels the character and the series tackles in its plot and character development:

“I think the question that the season puts out there is ‘how can you change your nature? What do you do when the mission’s over?’ I think it’s an interesting storyline, but if you take a step further, there’s been real study and look into PTSD and folks who really can operate okay just as long as the bullets are flying, just as long as they’re on mission, just as long as the purpose is very clear, but when things get really out of wack and tough for a lot of folks it’s when the quiet comes and you gotta deal with what’s going on in your head.”

This time around, Castle is protecting a young woman he saved from an assassination attempt in a bar. Castle learns that the man behind the attempt is an alt-right fundamentalist who may have aligned with Castle’s best friend-turned-bitter enemy, Billy Russo. From there, insight into a tortured anti-hero’s mind (and bloody action scenes) will ensue, and this writer is counting down the seconds until he can experience it.

Season two of Marvel’s The Punisher premieres this Friday, January 18, on Netflix.
