LRM Exclusive: Venom Director Confirms They Hope To Bring Spider-Man Into The Story Later

A lot of us spent a good deal of time scratching our heads when it was confirmed that Sony would indeed be moving forward with a standalone Venom film. Many of us on our staff have questioned just how they planned on moving forward with an origin story without Spider-Man being involved. This was, after all, a Spider-Man character, when all said and done, so it seems impossible for us to imagine a world without Peter Parker.

When the movie was first announced, it was also teased that there was a potential for Spider-Man to meet up with Venom in some way down the line, but is this something they had to plan for in making this film? Our own Gig Patta had a chance to sit down with Venom director Ruben Fleischer and ask that very question, and it seems clear they had high hopes to set the foundation for a potential clash in a future project.

“The obvious thing that we are all excited to do is have Venom face off against Spider-Man at some point. So that was something…we knew we couldn’t use Spider-Man in this movie or didn’t want to use him in this movie. But we were all really excited about the potential for Spider-Man and Venom at some point in the future meeting up. Without spoiling anything, there are other adversaries from the world of Venom that we’re excited to meet up with in the future.”

So yeah, in case there was any doubt as to where Sony and Fleischer’s heads were at, there it is. They do plan on utilizing Spider-Man in the future, if at all possible. But Gig also asked a follow-up question: was Fleischer at all disappointed that they couldn’t use Spider-Man in this movie? Here’s what Fleischer told us:

“I felt like this movie is Venom’s movie and I didn’t want to distract from that. There is more than enough to explore with Eddie Brock and Venom in this film that we felt very satisfied with the story that we were telling.”

But will audiences be satisfied? The film hits theaters in a little under the week, and it’s a question we’re all wondering. Rest assured, you’ll be able to hear from us as soon as humanly possible once we screen the film (in fact, two of our writers will be screening it, so you’ll get two perspectives).

Be sure to keep an eye out for our full interview with Ruben Fleischer this coming Thursday!
