Mark Hamill On The Tight Security Measure Employed By Lucasfilm For Star Wars: Episode IX

Star Wars may well still be the biggest movie franchise that exists, although these days it is certainly getting a run for its money, or your money to be completely frank. As such when it comes to security, Lucasfilm may well be the best out there at preventing leaks. In reality, though there were a few, we really did not get many important leaks appearing for either The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi. Given that I was around snooping for leaks for the Prequel movies back in days gone by, I can say with some authority that this new security-conscious Lucasfilm is something that has happened since Disney took over the reins. Leaks were everywhere for the prequels.

Mark Hamill, you know, that guy from that Star Wars movie, with the laser sword… Yeah him. Well, Mark recently spoke with EW about how security conscious Lucasfilm has become and some of the measures taken to ensure secrecy of a movie’s plot. The movie icon also mentions a very big role he will be taking on soon, but in typical secrecy/NDA fashion, he cannot tell us anything more than that yet. Bah!

“I still have to go over and do Episode IX, most of the parts I have coming up beside Star Wars are voiceover — there’s one big one, very high profile, I can’t announce now, that I’m really excited about. You know how it is these days, every time you sign NDAs. I remember back when I read the first Star Wars [script], I was like, ‘Wow, that’s the goofiest thing I’ve ever read.’ I gave it to my best friend to read, and I said, ‘What do you think of it?’ He said, ‘It’s really wild, it’s crazy, can I give it to Meredith?’ ‘Sure, go ahead.’ It went around to all my friends. Of course back then nobody cared. Nowadays it’s like working for some secret deep state government organization, like being in the CIA. They’re going to send rewrites over to Prague on this dark red paper that gives you a headache to read.”

The dark red paper that Hamill refers to here was also used for The Force Awakens, the idea is that you cannot easily and quickly photocopy the script, because any black and white copier will simply show the entire page as black. Little was Lucasfilm aware of the evil Color photocopying Empire rising against them! Though in all seriousness secrecy does seem far better now than it ever did in the past for big tentpole movies.

“They’re going to fly [the rewrites] over with somebody from the company. They’re going to come and give it to me and wait for me to read it before I give it back. So no pressure! You can’t even keep it overnight. But that’s the way it is now. I like to make notes, little cartoon drawings in the margins to help me visualize it … whatever you have to do to help remember it, you can’t do that in electronic form, it’s so impersonal. I’m old school and long for the days of paper scripts. They wound up letting me keep a script when we were doing The Last Jedi, but I had to lock it up in a safe every night and then carry it with me and never let it out of my sight. And I can understand why — if [a script] gets out it ruins it for everyone.”

Maybe I’m reaching here, but the fact Mark doesn’t need to have a script he can keep, kinda tells me that his part in Episode 9 is not as big as it was in The Last Jedi, hardly surprising considering he died in the last movie. Can anyone say Force Ghost for one or two scenes? There is also the fact that principal photography has been going on for some time with the main cast and yet Hamill hasn’t even shot his own scenes yet.

Evidence of Lucasfilm’s reputation for security is easily gauged by the fact they were consulted by HBO’s Game of Thrones team to help with security for the final season of Game of Thrones. Though, they may want to look out for their security regarding extra’s as there are one or two we think currently working on the movie and spilling every little detail they can find on Reddit.

What do you think of Hamill’s comments, are you happy Lucasfilm takes such care to avoid spoilers, or would you simply rather hear more about Mark Hamill’s big secret role he can’t talk about? Feel secure leaving your thoughts in our completely open to the public comments forums below.
