Martin Scorcese Talks The De-Aging Process For his Film The Irishman

It looks like both of my articles tonight will deal with CGI. Moving from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where CGI is much more common, to the world of crime, one involving Hollywood Legends Martin Scorcese, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel.

While Scorcese’s films aren’t usually ones that have a heavy amount of CGI, his new film, The Irishman, will require a decent amount of the newer process of digital de-aging. While appearing on the A24 Podcast in a double interview, in wihch Scorcese and fellow filmmaker Joanna Hogg interviewed one other, the famed director talked of the  deagin process. You can check out what Scorcese had to say about the techniqu

“What I’m concerned about…what we’re all concerned about, is that we’re so used to watching them [with] the older faces. When we put them all together and there are cuts back and forth…now I’m seeing [that] certain shots need more work on the eyes…the wrinkles and things have changed. So it’s changed the eyes. If that’s the case, then [what] was in the eyes that I liked? Was an intensity, was a gravitas. Was it threat…I don’t know.”

It’s an interesting process that will only get better. The technique has actually been used for over a decade now, but has only within the last few years has it become more commonly used. Inconic characters that have been deaged include Jack Sparrow, Princess Leia, Grand Moff Tarkin. As well as a handful from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most recently Michael Douglas and Stan Lee in Endgame. Will Smith is set to be de-aged in his upcoming film Gemini.
