Marvel Seeking Openly Gay Actor For The Eternals

We are anxiously waiting for Avengers: Endgame while being equally anxious for finding out what comes next. One thing we do know coming after Endgame will be The Eternals. This is a cosmic property dealing with characters that were/are the result of Celestials experimenting on humans. The film is set to be directed by Chloe Zhao (The RiderSongs My Brothers Taught Me) and will hit in 2020. There has been no real news on casting or even which characters we’ll be seeing in the film… Until now.

The Hashtag Show is reporting that Marvel Studios is actively seeking an openly gay male for a lead role in The Eternals. The description in their search for an actor includes: he must be 30 to 49 years old and look like a superhero. They are open to any ethnicity too. There is no information on which character they are casting for. This would be the first openly gay actor in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but not the first LGBT character as Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is bisexual. However, a scene depicting Valkyrie’s sexuality was cut from Thor: Ragnarok.

This should come as no surprise after Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, told The Playlist last year that Marvel would be bringing more LGBT characters into the universe. He mentioned that there would be characters we’ve seen (Valkyrie for example) and new ones.

Personally I have no issue with casting a gay actor to play a gay character. While acting requires people to play make-believe, it’s not wrong to seek someone who has experience in character traits of who they’ll be playing. I do agree that acting jobs should be based on who is best suited for the role regardless of race, gender, or sexuality but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a preference.

Studios have been trying to raise the diversity of their casts and characters. DC’s shows on the CW are known for LGBT characters, and actors and trans actor Zack Barack will be in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Most of this should be without controversy, but with 7 billion opinions available on this planet, there’s bound to be people that are upset. As long as it makes sense, comes naturally, is based on talent, and provides great entertainment I do not care who plays what.
