Marvel Studios Gearing Up For First Asian Superhero Shang-Chi

Looks like Marvel Studios is starting to take diversity pretty seriously. According to a new report from Deadline, they are currently developing Shang-Chi, which is set to be the first superhero tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist, which is absolutely crazy.

The studio has hired Chinese-American writer Dave Callaham, who has quite the record with films like Zombieland 2, Wonder Woman 1984, the Expendables films, and Godzilla. He is also the creator of the series Jean-Claude Van Johnson and will be a writer on Spider-Man: into the Spider-Verse 2 and Mortal Kombat, so this guy clearly has a solid body of work that speaks for itself.

I can honestly say that this is the first Marvel Studios property we’ll be getting where I have absolutely no knowledge of the source material. Unlike others like Guardians of the Galaxy, where I’d at least heard of it (even if I wasn’t overly familiar with the content), I didn’t even know a property called Shang-Chi existed. The outlet states the character first appeared in the 1970s around the time Enter the Dragon took off. Here’s what else they had to say about the character.

“Shang-Chi is the son of China-based globalist who raised and educated his progeny in his reclusive China compound, closed off to the outside world. The son trained in the martial arts and developed unsurpassed skills. He is eventually introduced to the outside world to do his father’s bidding, and then has to come to grips with the fact his revered father might not be the humanitarian he has claimed to be and is closer to what others call him: The Devil’s Doctor. He also might be centuries old. The deceit makes them bitter enemies.”

According to the outlet, the film’s script will modernize the character and avoid typical stereotypes we’re used to seeing, which is probably a good move.
