Marvel TV Head Jeph Loeb Explains Why Agents Of SHIELD Season 7 Will Be Its Last

Just prior to SDCC this previous weekend we found out that Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Season 7 (set to air in 2020) would be its last. However, unlike most network TV shows the decision to end didn’t come from ABC, but by Marvel themselves.

Marvel’s TV head Jeph Loeb spoke with ComicBook.com at SDCC and explained why that decision was taken for Agents of SHIELD.

“So we were about halfway through the season and they [the network] called again and said, ‘this is great, do you have a great idea for season seven?’ And we were like…nope,” Loeb said. “And at this time we all got together and said ‘look if we’re going to do this, let’s make this the last hurrah. Let’s go out with a parade. Let’s end the story so that we can do it on our terms because the problem is that it’s never the studio’s decision. It’s always the network’s decision and so we said let’s take the risk. Let’s go back to them and say we’ll do it as long as we can end the show.”

The show was famously on a shaky nail towards the end of Season 5, and it came as quite a surprise when it was greenlit for Season 6. Loeb seems happier with the idea that the writers this time get to make the decision about how it will all end fully.

“That way the writers were free to sort of do well, we don’t have to worry about what we are going to do in Season 8.”

Season 7 is filming now and it sounds like the finale is going to be a bit of a heartbreaker for fans of the show.

“We’re shooting that now,” says Loeb. “The finale, the series finale. You know there is a very definition of bittersweet. It is, you know, on the bitter side because it’s just a wonderful job that we’ve had for seven years with this family of people. Then there is the sweet part which is that we are going to end it on our terms. The last two scripts, in particular, are…you know, if you’ve got a heart, you will hear it breaking.”

I really need to catch up with this show, the channel it appeared on in the UK was not my favourite and it would arrive on screen far later than in the US. I sort of fell away from it at the end of Season 4. I have two full season to catch up on before Season 7 airs next year and not a lot of time to dedicate to it, however, I am sure I can manage it by 2020, I hope?
