MARVEL’S THE INHUMANS: James Gunn On Whether Vin Diesel Could Still Play Black Bolt

Several years back, Vin Diesel’s impending involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a question mark. That’s not to say we didn’t know whether or not he’d actually be in one of their movies, but rather it was a big question as to which role he would play. It was a toss up. Would he play the character of Black Bolt in the Inhumans film, or would he play Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy? Last year, despite the fact that Diesel had already played Groot, it then became a question as to whether or not that would actually nix him from the list of actors who could still play Black Bolt in The Inhumans. Diesel even discussed the possibility with io9.

“We’ve heard a lot of talk about Marvel wanting to have me play a character that doesn’t have my voice. So my voice is used for Groot and my presence is used for the other character.”

That would be an interesting approach, and considering Black Bolt’s voice has the power to level cities, they wouldn’t really be able to use Diesel’s voice, whichwould make for the perfect role for someone whose voice is already being utilized in this universe.

Of course, in the year since that quote. A few months back, The Inhumans was pulled from Marvel Studios’ Phase 3 slate, and within the past week, it was announced that it would no longer be a movie, but a TV series on ABC. So what does this mean for Vin Diesel’s potential involvement? A lot of actors are moving around from movie to TV and back again, so it’s not out of the question that Diesel still couldn’t lend his talents to the project.

Well, it seems unlikely — at least that’s what Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn stated while answering a fan’s question on Facebook. Here’s what he had to say:

“The Inhumans is going to be a TV show. Unless Vin wants to take a huge pay cut and sign up to do a TV show it seems unlikely.”

So is it possible that Diesel could still play Black Bolt? Definitely. But it’ll all be dependent on whether or not Diesel is willing to scale back his going rate substantially in order to make the show possible. You never know, but I’m certainly one to think he wouldn’t do that, for fear of undervaluing himself.

We’ll have to wait and see.
