BioWare’s Mass Effect teaser snuck in during The Game Awards. While everyone was fawning over the Disney investor day, myself included, this little news nugget dropped. It is breathtaking. Take a look at the trailer below.
SPOILERS?
Since eight years have passed since BioWare’s Mass Effect 3, do we need to label anything as a spoiler? In this Mass Effect teaser, we see the destroyed relay. Seeing this does not necessarily mean this game picks up immediately after Mass Effect 3. More on that shortly. Of course, any Mass Effect fan will recognize the N7 logo buried in the snow. As the Mass Effect teaser ends, we see the identity of the mysterious character. It appears to be Liara. Her species can live an astoundingly long time. So, does the game take place immediately after the third entry? Given Liara could have lived hundreds of years after the last game, it is anyone’s guess. Hopefully, the ending “Mass Effect Will Continue” means this is a proper sequel.
The Future
Mass Effect Andromeda was the last entry in the franchise. Although I lump it into the same category as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Casey Hudson, who was instrumental to the success of BioWare’s Mass Effect franchise, left BioWare before Andromeda’s development. Hudson returned in 2017 as general manager for BioWare. On December 3, Hudson retired from the studio. In the announcement, Hudson believed the studio had an “experienced group of project and department leaders who are ready to guide BioWare into the future.” The Mass Effect teaser gives me hope for the future of this franchise. If the Mass Effect teaser captured your interest, then check out the Mass Effect Legendary Edition set for release in early 2021. This edition is a remaster of the first three games and should be worth your time.
What are your impressions of the Mass Effect teaser? Are you ready for a new Mass Effect game?
