The animation world has been eagerly waiting for the trailer for Matt Groening’s latest animated series Disenchantment. Groening likes to put a new spin on different genres with The Simpsons covering the prevalent American Sitcom, Futurama portraying science fiction, and Disenchantment taking a crack at the fantasy genre. Disenchantment has Groening’s distinct artwork blending his two previous series with Princess Bean’s sidekick Elfo heavily resembling Bart Simpson.
The trailer released shows humor akin to The Simpsons and Futurama with predominant use of beer a staple in Groening’s work. The slice of life aspect is still present despite being set in the fantasy kingdom of Dreamland. The show takes a lot of jabs at the hottest fantasy show Game of Thrones seen when Bean breaks off the wedding in front of an iron throne replica. Eric Andre’s Luci, a demon looking to set the world on fire, adds a nice dynamic to the show countering the optimistic view of Nat Faxon’s Elfo. Seeing the world through Abbi Jacobson’s Princess Bean acts as a neutral character as she grows up and rebels against the norms of the kingdom.
Disenchantment will be available through Netflix which shows the changing dynamic of media intake since Groening’s last series, Futurama, premiered 20 years ago. Groening’s series first was broadcasted by FOX though Futurama bounced around until finding a home on Comedy Central. Being on Netflix will make the series available for binge-watching especially since there are only 10 episodes in the first season.
Disenchantment will be available to stream on August 17th on Netflix.
