Matt Reeves Finally Gives Up The Goods On The Batman

The Batman, for some time now the film has sort of been the Bigfoot of the superhero movie world. People close to he film have said it’s real and in development, but not enough information to really believe it would ever make to screen.  Tons of rumors with little official word, this has been a somewhat frustrating project to follow.
Today it appears we finally get some news with meat on the bone, as Reeves had a talk with The Hollywood Reporter, and revealed a substantial amount of information about the long gestating film. You can check out what Reeves had to say below.
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation… There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things… We haven’t been dated. I wouldn’t commit to this, but we’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.”

So what from Reeves said above, we could be waiting around another two years for this film., meaning in total it would been in development/production for six years. I guess if Reeves gives fans a badass Batman film, it will a be worth it, but it’s a long time to ask fans to wait, even though Reeves hasn’t been involved the entire time. Reeves also addressed whether or not The Batman will be part of DC’s extended universe, and also mentions that a title change is possible.
“Right now, I’m involved in The Batman. What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know. Aquaman is going to be very different from the Todd Phillips Joker movie, and that’s going to be different from Shazam! and Harley Quinn. Warners believes they don’t have to try to develop a giant slate that has to have all the plans for how it’s going to connect. What they need to try and do is make good movies with these characters. What’s exciting about Batman is how it relates to now and also how personal it can be.”
I’m in. I mean, I was always in, it’s Batman. However the Rogues Gallery does sweeten the pot, though it would be nice to get a list of which Batman villains will be part of the gallery soon. As for the focus on the Dark Knight’s detective skills, this is an attribute of the character that has for the most part been downplayed on the screen, so I think this will be a nice change of pace for fans, as long as the other traits of the character remain intact. And perhaps the biggest question of all still remains, who is playing Batman? Is Affleck in or out?
