Sony is moving ahead with their Morbius movie starring Jared Leto in the role of Michael Morbius. This would be the second movie in Sony’s VenomVerse or whatever they are calling it after last year’s Venom movie.

I have very little interest in this franchise and have no intention of watching Venom anytime soon, but that’s just me, due to the absence of Spider-Man. For those that are interested, a new report from Variety says that Matt Smith (Doctor Who, Star Wars: Episode 9) is in final negotiations for a major role in the upcoming movie. Whilst there are no details around exactly what role this will be, it is guessed that perhaps Smith could be playing the film’s main antagonist.

Morbius will also feature Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising) from a script by Netflix’s Lost in Space co-creators Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and directed by Daniel Espinosa. The movie is being produced by Sony’s Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Lucas Foster. Whilst the release date for Morbius is expected to be around June 2020, this could change depending on how production progresses on the movie.

I really, really like Matt Smith as an actor having first seen him on UK TV screens even before he landed the role of The Doctor. I am concerned though that in order to try and break into Hollywood the actor is taking on some strange roles. Terminator: Genisys was an awful movie which featured Smith, and I have very little faith in Morbius at this point. Of course, we have no idea how big his role will be in Star Wars: Episode 9, so perhaps that could propel him into the mainstream more and enable him to be offered some roles in ‘better’ movies?
