Mayans MC Co-Creator Used Personal Experiences For Inspiration

In just over one week, fans of Sons Of Anarchy and it’s creator Kurt Sutter will be able to witness the next chapter in his continued stories of motorcycle gangs. Next Tuesday, Mayans MC will debut on FX. While the gang was featured throughout SOA, this time around, the Mayans will be the primary focus of this series. In order to bring authenticity to the series, Sutter sought out someone who has a connection to the culture and heritage that is tied into the MC.

Enter series co-creator Elgin James.

However, James admits that since he had grown up in the world of gangs and violence, he never expected to draw from his past to create a series. “It was something I said I never wanted to do once I became an artist,” said James in an interview with Stuff. In 2011, James was sentenced to a year and a day in prison for crimes arising from his involvement with Boston gang FSU. James later realized, “That’s exactly what I have to do as an artist as opposed to pretend it doesn’t exist.” Thus, James and Sutter went on to create Mayans MC.

Mayans MC is set two years after the series finale of Sons Of Anarchy. The series will follow Mayans prospect Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (J.D. Pardo), a college kid turned convict who attempts to join the gang while hiding a deadly secret. The series has gained praise for having a Latino cast for a Latino story, but is also facing criticism since those characters are telling a criminal story. James had this to say regarding the criticism:

“Ever since I was a kid I’ve watched black and brown characters on television who just become these criminals, these one-dimensional characters. A lot of the people on Mayans, behind the camera and in front of the camera, grew up in the cycle of poverty and violence and incarceration – I know that I did. This is the first time we get to tell our own stories from inside out, which is incredibly important to me. The first time we get to put a human face to it. I do know that I have these stories I have to tell. I have this damage inside me that I have to get out.”

Mayans MC premieres Tuesday, September 4th on FX.
