Microsoft Announce They Will Explore A New Strategic Partnership With Sony Going Forward

So I guess Microsoft and Sony are direct competitors in basically only one market and that’s video games consoles. The Sony PlayStation brand is the number one games console brand in the world and massively outsells Microsoft’s Xbox brand in both Asia and Europe. So we wouldn’t expect them to ever work together on sharing basis, would we?

Well, it turns out that this is actually happening and an announcement over at Microsoft.com has pointed to both Microsoft and Sony working to explore a strategic partnership. While the details all get a bit too technical for someone like me. The general gist is that as part of the memorandum of understanding, Sony and Microsoft will explore collaboration in the areas of semiconductors and AI. Not only that, but explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services. In addition, the two companies will explore the use of current Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services.

As I said, it gets a bit too technical for me. So here is what both Sony and Microsoft had to say about this joint venture.

“Sony is a creative entertainment company with a solid foundation of technology. We collaborate closely with a multitude of content creators that capture the imagination of people around the world, and through our cutting-edge technology, we provide the tools to bring their dreams and vision to reality,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, president and CEO of Sony. “PlayStation(r) itself came about through the integration of creativity and technology. Our mission is to seamlessly evolve this platform as one that continues to deliver the best and most immersive entertainment experiences, together with a cloud environment that ensures the best possible experience, anytime, anywhere. For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content. Additionally, I hope that in the areas of semiconductors and AI, leveraging each company’s cutting-edge technology in a mutually complementary way will lead to the creation of new value for society.”

“Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation,” said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. “Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.”

Whatever way you swing it, surely the idea of these big powerhouses working together is good for the consumer, because the technology and the quality we have will be duplicated across both company’s devices going forward. Of course, they are still competitors and rest assured that when the PlayStation 5 is released along with whatever the new Xbox will be called, both parties will want to outsell the other where possible.

This could be good news for developers though, who know that whatever they dream up, can be duplicated on either console. I guess the market share will depend once again on who produces the most sought after first-party exclusive games, which Sony is far ahead with this current generation of consoles.

What do you think of this news, how will this affect the console wars going forward? If anyone more technically minded than me can work out exactly what they are sharing here, then feel free to educate me in the usual spot below.
