Mid90s Trailer 2: Jonah Hill’s Directorial Debut Touted As A Masterpiece

Uh-oh. Would you look at the date? It’s already fall. We’re nearing the end of September, and with that comes the inevitable barrage of the Oscar contenders out there, which tend to include works from well-known actors who have decided to try their hand at directing. And would you know it, we have one film here from A24 that comes courtesy of actor Jonah Hill.

The film in question is Mid90s, and it looks to be quite a personal film, one that revels in the skating culture of the ’90s, when middle schoolers’ entire social lives were often spent skateboarding around town and causing trouble. If you’re someone like me who grew up in the ’90s, you may see a lot here that looks familiar, even if you weren’t really a part of that culture.

In keeping with the time period, the film was shot on Super 16mm, so that’s why we have that 1.33:1 aspect ratio and tons of grain. All these forces combined make it look like a real contender for the Oscars, which, to some viewers, may be more of a turnoff than a turn-on.

Below is the official synopsis for Mid90s:

“Mid90s follows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 90s-era LA who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.”

Mid90s hits theaters on October 19, 2018.
