Moonlight Director Drops If Beale Street Could Talk Trailer

Having a number of short films on his resume, writer/director Barry Jenkins burst onto the scene with his critically-acclaimed drama Moonlight. Telling the story of a young African-American man at three stages in his life as he comes to terms with his sexuality and his first love, Moonlight went on to win the Academy Award for Best Film, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney. Adding to his directing cred an episode of Dear White People on Netflix, Jenkins has now given the world a look at his next project.

Using his Twitter account this morning, Jenkins dropped the first trailer for his upcoming film If Beale Street Could Talk, his film adaptation of the 1974 James Baldwin novel. The trailer immediately followed on YouTube.

The novel If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of Fonny and Tish, a couple who’s strong love protects them from their families and the outside world until Fonny is falsely accused of rape. Baldwin was an acclaimed novelist and social critic. His unfinished manuscript, Remember This House was adapted into the Oscar-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro. Jenkins made it a point to release this trailer on Baldwin’s Birthday.

If Beale Street Could Talk stars Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Regina King, Pedro Pascal, Dave Franco and Diego Luna. The film is being distributed by Annapurna Pictures with Plan B Entertainment and Pastel Productions producing the project. The film will premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is set to be released in the US on November 30th.
