More Details Appear About Rumored New ‘The Matrix’ Movie – Set To Film Early Next Year

We have heard a few rumblings about a possible new movie in The Matrix franchise recently, possibly starring Michael B. Jordan and once again being directed by the Wachowski’s, but the reports have been conflicting on that front thus far. However, according to sources that Discussing Film have spoken to, the movie is definitely happening and may be filming sooner than expected.

According to the outlet, the Wachowskis will once again direct the movie and it is set to begin filming in early 2020 in Chicago. They also say that Michael B. Jordan will star in the movie and that there is no news about a possible return for Keanu Reeves, star of the first three Matrix movies. Apparently, Hugh Bateup, who was an art director on The Matrix will once again be involved with this fourth movie, but other than that details are being kept under wraps. The outlet also confirms that the working title of the movie is ‘Project Ice Cream’, which was previously reported by The GWW.

We still have no idea whether this movie is a sequel, a prequel or a complete reboot of the series, and we may not find this information out for some time. The Matrix was a phenomenon when it was released in 1999, and I recall being completely blown away by that first movie in a summer when Star Wars: The Phantom Menace should have been the biggest draw at theaters.

The sequels, however, left a lot to be desired and I was thoroughly disappointed by the lackluster final product of both movies. In fact, I remember making my own edit of both The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions into one three hour movie with much of the needless fat cut out. I had a system whereby any scenes involving ‘The Kid’ were left out as I despised every moment that character appeared on screen in both movies. They were lukewarm vague shadowy reflections of that first movie and given the potential it showed, in my opinion, they were complete failures as sequels.

Is there any appetite left for more Matrix stories any longer? Does anyone have any confidence in the Wachowski’s delivering a satisfying Matrix movie after a series of (again in my opinion) missteps in their movie making career since that first movie? I certainly don’t, and yet there is something appealing and attractive about that universe IF they got it right. The issue seems to be that there feels like more opportunities to get this wrong than there is to get it right though. I also wonder whether the movie has maintained enough of its pop culture appeal to bring in audiences by the droves for a fourth movie?

I guess time will tell, but it does appear as if a The Matrix 4 movie is definitely being developed right now for filming next year.

Are you excited by a new Matrix movie, if not, what could they do to make you care about this franchise again after so many years? Leave your thoughts and follow the white rabbit into our very deep rabbit hole below.
