Mortal Kombat Writer Wants To Tackle A Bioshock Movie

Writer of the Mortal Kombat movie, (an adaption of the video game of the same name) Greg Russo certainly has his fingers in a lot of video game adaptations right now. In addition to Mortal Kombat he is supposedly also working on Saints Row and Resident Evil movies. However, Russo has his sights set on another video game franchise he thinks is ripe for adaptation and that’s Bioshock.

Bioshock was released in 2007 and is regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time by many, including myself. I think as a single-player story-based game, Bioshock is only rivaled by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for me, it was that good. But would it work as a movie? Here is what Russo said about his dram project when speaking with ComicBook.com recently.

“I would love to figure out a way to do BioShock and I’ve tried. I’ve been like elbowing everybody I can possibly find, because I think I have a really awesome way to do it that would be really fun. And bring the horror of it to the forefront and hopefully keep the budget at a manageable price. But yeah, that’s one that I’d absolutely adore, that be a lot of fun to work on.”

I’m honestly not sure, for me it depends on how good his work is on these other movies, because with a franchise and a story I love so much, I don’t want to see it given the treatment that most video game adaptations receive on film.

Bioshock is a pretty complicated game, with very adult themes, and some great twists and really dark, twisted characters. It is set in the fictional city of Rapture, a city built underwater and the game takes place some years after it has all gone to Hell. The first game was a masterpiece, the second game was not and the third, well the story was a match for the first, but I disliked some of the gameplay changes made to that final installment.

If I’m honest I would be far more excited to hear that 2K and Irrational Games were making a sequel for this console generation or the next. The experience in the game works because you are in control and yet not really in control at all. I am just not sure if that would translate to a movie that has to tell a story within a two-hour timeframe. If it was a long-form story on TV, I would be more excited.

Well, who knows if anyone will move ahead with Russo’s ideas and he will get to work on a Bioshock movie, but I’ll be keeping my ears peeled on this one for sure?

What do you think, any Bioshock fans here, would this work as a movie, or would you rather just have a new game like me? Harvest for some ADAM and watch for those Big Daddy’s in the usual spot below.
