Audiences just can’t seem to get enough Stephen King. At this point, I completely lost track of the number of movies and TV shows that we’ve seen adapted from his source material. One such adaptation that I feel got swept under the rug is Mr. Mercedes. The first season of Mr. Mercedes follows the first book of the same name, where a retired detective tries to stop A psychotic killer from blowing up a stadium.
But that’s not the only book in the series. King also wrote two follow-ups –Finders Keepers, and End of Watch. It seemed like in the inevitability that this series would pretty much last three seasons, with each season covering one of the novels. And with the first season ultimately covering that first book, that bit of speculation seems to be all but confirmed.
Mr. Mercedes executive producer David E. Kelley sat down with THR, and in his conversations, he discussed their master plan for the series as a whole.
“The master plan, which of course is always subject to change, is each book would represent a whole season, and Mr. Mercedes is the first season. Then we’ll turn to season two and the second book, but we haven’t congregated as a writing group yet and begun to kick around stories for year two, so it’s premature to say anything beyond that. But the concept, in success, is we would do each book as an entire season of 10 episodes.”

Okay, that all seems well and good. But in the world of TV more content is better than less content. Should this be a huge success, is it possible that there could be more adventures beyond End of Watch? Here’s what Kelley said:
“Yes, initially, though in success it could go on beyond that. That’s everybody’s plan, isn’t it? You keep going and going and you keep finding more new stories. But going into this, the idea is that we have three books and in success it would make for three seasons and then, who knows? Maybe longer if we’re having fun.”
This is always something that’s a bit of a double edge sword. On one hand, if the series continues to be good, then why not have more? But experience has proven that more shows tend to overstay their welcome than not. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this one turns out, but I really didn’t enjoy that first season.
