Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Mulan has been in hot water for some time now. It’s leading star, Yifei Liu, came out in support of the Hong Kong police (and therefore the mainland Chinese government) earlier this year and caused the #BoycottMulan trend on social media. For those of you that don’t know, China’s alleged human rights violations range from stifling free movement and free speech to political imprisonment and Muslim concentration camps. Not too hard to understand why people aren’t big fans of those supporting the Chinese government.
There is a lot of tension in sports, e-sports, and Hollywood when it comes to China. The NBA and Blizzard Activision have both found themselves in hot water with fans over their attempts to cozy up to the Chinese government to remain in the market over there. It is a huge market after all.

Disney must be extra worried about their film though because they are apparently going to have four months of reshoots. The Dis Insider is reporting that the film hasn’t tested well and extensive reshoots are planned between now and February.
Reshoots are nothing new to movies these days. They are common amongst big-budget films and usually include enhancing action scenes or adding small story elements. However, they’re usually only a few weeks long, not four months. The outlet doesn’t know what exactly is being reshot, but with such a huge amount of time, we may see some serious concerns about Mushu and the songs from the original addressed.
It’s been reported that Mushu the talking dragon was replaced with a non-speaking phoenix and that none of the original’s songs would be sung in this film. That didn’t sit well with many fans of the original animated film. Personally, I like the idea of making this film a war epic over a musical.
