Mystery Science Theater 3000 Dropped By Netflix

With Netflix now having to compete with new streaming services like Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Peacock, and others, they find themselves looking to refine their focus on original content. With that they have canceled several series like No Good Nick, Designated Survivor, She’s Gotta Have It, Chambers and Santa Clarita Diet. Among those series, I am very sad to report that one of my favorite series Mystery Science Theater 3000 has also been canceled at Netflix.

The host for MST3K Jonah Ray revealed via a thread on his Twitter that the series would not be returning for a third season, something that Netflix would also later confirm. “So, Netflix decided to not do another season of MST3K. We are off to Get Down in Lilyhammer while the OA helps us take it One Day At A Time. We will be in group therapy with Tuca & Bertie, Jessica Jones, & Lady Dynamite. The sessions will be run by Gypsy (w/ Naomi Watts.) thread”.

MST3K has been around since 1988 when it was created by Joel Hodgson. It has been featured on The Comedy Channel/Comedy Central and The Sci-Fi Channel. Then in 2017 after being crowdfunded by Hodgson it was picked up by Netflix and lasted two seasons. Since the series has lasted so long and has a cult following, Ray is confident that the series will be picked up by someone else. Especially when you take into account that their Kickstarter to get them to Netflix raised $5.7 million, which holds the record for the highest-funded film and TV campaign in history.

It is interesting that they would decide to cancel this series as it held a 100 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics and 92 percent viewer rating. As well as having a comic book series that was published by Dark Horse. With so many different streaming services looking for content I think it’s just a matter of time before we see Ray and the robots riffing once again.
