Netflix Announces Selena The Series In Teaser Video

Selena was a very formative star in my childhood. I grew up with those songs being blasted out of my sister’s boombox nonstop growing up, and when that Jennifer Lopez film hit, it only amplified the whole deal all the more. I’ve watched that movie more times than I can count, so needless to say, the idea of a series is an interesting one for me. And that’s exactly what Netflix is giving us, as they announced.

The new original series is being called the “official story” of Selena Quintanilla and is being described as, “A coming of age story following Selena as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family, and music.”

For those worried this would be a more exploitative take, it’s worth mentioning that the Quintanilla family is heavily involved in the project, and are serving as executive producers.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister said in a statement. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

Also writing and executive producing is Star and American Crime‘s Moisés Zamora.
