Netflix Locks Down Film Jumanji Director Starring The Rock

If for some reasons you were still under the impression that Netflix films — or films from streaming services — should be considering less than quality affairs than their theatrical counterparts, I have four words for you: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. But for the sake of clarity, I’ll be sure to add more words so you actually know what I’m talking about.

According to a new report from THR, Netflix has locked down the rights to a movie called John Henry and the Statesmen, a film where Johnson will portray the mythical John Henry, who worked so hard he blew out his own heart and died. Apparently, he will lead an ensemble cast pulled from other legends from around the world. The script comes from The Lego Movie and Puss in Boots writer Tom Wheeler and will come from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle helmer Jake Kasdan.

“We have been committed to an international storytelling model for more than a decade,” Seven Bucks Production producer Dany Garcia said. “Our partnership with Netflix is giving us an incredible opportunity to reach a broad and diverse audience in the most accessible and intimate manner. We are absolutely thrilled with the opportunity.”

Netflix’s head of film Scott Stuber added, “Dwayne is a global superstar, inarguably one of the most popular actors in the world. He and Jake are a tremendous duo with a proven track record of entertaining audiences worldwide. We’re delighted to be able to partner with them and collaborate with Seven Bucks Productions and FPC. This is a story with universal appeal and we can’t wait to bring these characters to families around the globe.”
