Netflix Originals Outpacing Licensed Content

We all love Netflix, obviously. The streaming service has continued to gain massive popularity over the years, but that’s not all.  Netflix’s original programs have made massive jumps over the past few years off of many of their stellar series including: Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, 13 Reasons Why, Peaky Blinders, House of Cards, and Narcos, just to name a select few.

Deadline reported how significant the increase in popularity with Netflix Originals has been.  Considering just U.S. releases prior to December 2018, original series were up to 51% as opposed to other movies or shows acquired by the streaming service.  This was a massive increase from the 25% just two years prior in December 2016. Now the term “originals” can mean shows developed from the script stage or other companies that Netflix has partnered with.

This is an area where Netflix dominates the likes of rivals Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.  What has been there reasoning for switching the focus to these original series?  They are working to be proactive in order to avoid the larger media suppliers such as Disney.  This way popular shows can stay with the streaming service rather than possibly being taken with the larger supplier. Approximately 30% of Netflix’s content is from larger studios which could mean that popular shows and films could be taken away if those studios choose to run their own streaming service, much like Disney.

Content chief for Netflix, Ted Sarandos, mentioned that this approach has been intentional and that it has been “a corner that I’m glad we saw around a few years ago. And today, I’d say the vast majority of the content that is watched on Netflix are our original content brands.”

What is your favorite Netflix Original series?  Are there any shows you are worried may leave the streaming service eventually? (That’d be The Office for me).  Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
