Netflix Releases Statement In Wake Of Push To Change Oscar Requirements

The elitism in the film industry is real. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Steven Spielberg, but I couldn’t personally disagree more with the man’s stance on what a film experience should be and what a studio must do in order for their movies to qualify for the most coveted trophy in the industry: an Academy Award.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, over the weekend, we covered news surrounding the potential changing of rules for the Oscar race. In the wake of Netflix’s Roma taking home a few awards, including Best Director, there’s been a push to extend an exclusive theatrical run in order for a movie to qualify. This was even being supported by Spielberg himself, who believes making a movie for streaming is pretty much equivalent to making a TV movie, which he thinks should qualify for an Emmy, not an Oscar.

Netflix has now released a statement on Twitter:

“We love cinema. Here are some things we also love:

“-Access for people who can’t always afford, or live in towns without, theaters
-Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time
-Giving filmmakers more ways to share art

“These things are not mutually exclusive.”

Bravo, Netflix. I mean, sure, my cynical side knows that Netflix is painting themselves as the underdog everyman here in order to garner support, but I do support the overall push for reform. In my opinion, some of these film snobs need to get off their high horse and understand that having to walk into a theater with an audience need no longer be the experience in order to qualify for awards. It’s a dated idea and those who cling onto it are doing nothing but highlighting the divide between the snooty purists and mainstream audiences.

But, of course, that’s just the opinion of one salty writer. What’s yours? Let us know down below!
