Netflix Testing Out ‘Ultra’ Subscription Plan

Technology never sits still. Just when you think you’ve caught up, the bar gets raised, prices get higher, and you’re left in the dust. In recent years, the streaming service Netflix has started to raise their prices in order to remain profitable amid rising overhead costs and an increased output of TV shows and films. But it doesn’t look like they’re done trying to milk your wallet just yet.

According to a report from Variety, Netflix is currently testing out the “Ultra” plan, which will offer their shows in Ultra HD. The goal of this test is to gauge users’ price sensitivity. Just how much more are they willing to pay in order to get that super-crisp 4K goodness?

There are two versions currently being tested. The first is $16.99 and will allow users four Ultra HD streams, and another “Premium” plan would cost $13.99, only allowing two Ultra HD streams. But the number of streams isn’t the only big difference. In addition to having four streams, the “Ultra” plan will have access to high dynamic range (HDR) content, which “provides more vibrant color reproduction and higher contrast.” Long story short, it will look prettier.

It’s worth noting that they are currently still testing, meaning that as of right now, only a small portion of customers are getting the option to test this out, and when all said and done, they may ultimately decide NOT to roll out this more expensive tier, should audiences prove overly-responsive to the price hike. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing happens, as many Netflix users have expressed their distaste at their rates being hiked on a yearly basis.

Would you pay $16.99 a month for an Ultra HD Plan? Let us know your thoughts down below!
