Netflix’s Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable Review: Truly Relatable?

It’s been 15 years since Ellen DeGeneres’ last stand-up comedy performance. It was well after the sudden end to her sitcom Ellen and her very public coming out of the closet. That year, she began her daytime talk show and since then she has become a staple in daytime television. Now, DeGeneres has returned to the stage with a Netflix special that premiered December 18th.

I’d like to tell you that Ellen DeGeneres has still got it, but the truth is she never lost it.

Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable is a return to comic greatness for the veteran comedian. Picking up where she left off, DeGeneres delivers material that covers her start in stand-up, everything she’s done since her last performance, her status as a celebrity, her relationship with Portia de Rossi and their travels around the world. On topics like proper grammar, driving etiquette, vegans, junk drawers, dancing, phrases and being a lesbian, DeGeneres delivers with her detailed explanations and awkward moments that leave the live audience (and this writer) in stitches.

In this writer’s opinion, DeGeneres is one of the great comedic talents of the 20th and 21st centuries. While she took a long hiatus, this Netflix special reminds us that DeGeneres easily commands an audience with her engaging storytelling and surprise punchlines. At age 60, Ellen DeGeneres has proven she is the versatile entertainer that can hold the attention of any set, hall, arena or stadium.

If you’re looking for a great 70+ minute stand-up featuring a legend who has mastered her craft, look no further than Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable, only on Netflix.
