Netflix’s Sci-Fi Thriller I Am Mother Gets Captivating Trailer

While the big screen is home to a lot of big-budget spectacles, home release is where an increasing number of thoughtful science fiction stories are starting to call home. Sure, we occasionally get our Blade Runner 2049s and our Ex Machinas, but I’m starting to see a lot of movies in this vein head straight to streaming services like Netflix more frequently — and you know what? I’m okay with it.

This latest sci-fi film comes in the form of I Am Mother, which stars Rose Byrne as the voice of Mother and Hilary Swank. The story features a girl who has been raised by a machine all her life in an isolated environment. She’s been told that the outside is uninhabitable and that she’s the last of her kind, only to be brought face to face with an intruder who is set to throw her entire world into chaos. To me, if anything else, this trailer made me hungry for a Portal movie.

Below is the trailer for I Am Mother:

I AM MOTHER is a sci-fi thriller about a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard), who is the first of a new generation of humans to be raised by Mother (Rose Byrne), a robot designed to repopulate the earth after the extinction of humankind. But the pair’s unique relationship is threatened when an injured stranger (Hilary Swank) arrives with news that calls into question everything Daughter has been told about the outside world and her Mother’s intentions.”
