New ‘Ancient’ Pokemon Revealed…And It’s This??

I’ve been covering the Pokémon: Let’s Go series for almost a half year and during that time I made many guesses to the what the “special” Pokémon would be. The long-awaited reveal is finally here and the special monster is Meltan, a gelatinous pile of solder with a nut for a head and bearing for a face. Impressed? Neither is most of the fanbase who honestly aren’t sure what to think beyond making simple jokes based on appearance.

Deez Nuts Meltan started appearing last weekend during Japan’s Pokémon Go’s community day event focusing on Chikorita. These Pokémon appeared then transformed into Ditto leaving gameplayers confused about what happened. A data miner, “Chrales,” found this creature in the app’s database and extracted a shiny variant. This squashed the notion of it being a placeholder similar to Porygon 2’s image in the recently leaked Gold and Silver‘s demo. The Pokedex number associated with Meltan was 891 indicating that there will be at least 84 new creatures in Gen 8. This Pokemon was later confirmed by The Official Pokémon YouTube channel where Professors Oak and Willow discuss the latest sightings of the creatures. It is nice to see The Pokémon Company actively retcon Oak as a worthy professor with knowledge of the world around him mentioning Meltan as an ancient Pokemon he’s read about.

Originality has never been a staple of Pokemon design and Meltan ties in with all the Muks, Electrodes, and Klinklangs in the world. The backstory could still save this Pokemon especially if they reveal it’s actually a retconned MissingNo.

Let us know your thoughts. What do you think of Meltan?
