Todd Phillips’ Joker movie is in production, and as expected, when a film is in production, you can expect all sorts of goodies to get leaked out by the ever-faithful paparazzi. It’s thanks to them that we’ve already had some pretty solid glimpses of Joaquin Phoenix in full Joker costume, and one could argue it’s because of leaks that we got the reveals from Phillips to begin with.

But I digress. The point is we have some juicy new photos from the film from the folks over at Just Jared. The 10 or so photos show Joaquin Phoenix and Zazie Beetz at a seedy diner. Check them out down below!

As we’d expect, this diner is anything but glamorous, and it plays well into the idea of this being a grounded gritty movie set in the ’80s. However, I’d like to point to one still in particular where Beetz is clearly smoking a cigarette. Why do I bring this up? Well, because smoking in films is something that doesn’t happen too often these days outside of R-rated films.

Over the years as the stigma has risen around smoking, the MPAA has become much stricter about the whole deal. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not an automatic R-rating if a character is smoking, but it is one big contributing factor to some R ratings. If they were looking to be safe for a PG-13 rating, they’d likely put out that butt and do the scene without it. No reason to jeopardize the rating potential, right?
