Mega producer Simon Kinberg, who joined us for an exclusive chat on the LOS FANBOYS Podcast two months ago, is having a lot of fun expanding the X-MEN Cinematic Universe over at Fox. The studio seems all too happy to create films that have very different looks and feels within the same shared world, and DEADPOOL was the first example of that. While it included characters from the primary X-MEN franchise, with Colossus and references to Professor X, DEADPOOL was a completely different animal. According to Kinberg, THE NEW MUTANTS, which was announced last year, is also going to be its own thing.
While DEADPOOL was a hard R action comedy that spoofed the comic book movie genre itself and appealed to adults, it sounds like THE NEW MUTANTS will be targeting the kinds of people who love Young Adult franchises like THE HUNGER GAMES.
Here’s what he told IGN:
“Josh Boone (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS) and his writing partner are working on the script. They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.
“That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”
It’s an interesting approach, and one that could yield strong results for Fox, if it’s able to keep all of these X-MEN movies separate but united.
Do you think there’s room for a Y.A.-style THE NEW MUTANTS series within Fox’s plans for an XCU?
