Nintendo President Discusses Video Game Addiction And How They Try To Combat It

Yeah, it may sound kind of silly, but last year, the World Health Organization declared that gaming disorder was a real malady that could affect all of us (though the classification won’t come into effect until 2022), if we’re not careful. Many of us have all had that game we can’t stop thinking about. Where our real life starts to feel a lot less important than beating that boss, getting that upgrade, or leveling up those characters. It’s something that Nintendo, of all companies, is taking very seriously.

At a recent investor Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa briefly discussed gaming addiction and the ways Nintendo is trying to fight against it.

“I think the problem of game addiction is more about becoming overly dependent on video games than is about any issues with the games themselves,” he said. “One thing we have done as a company that creates games is to implement features that allow parents to limit the time that their children can play games. I think that further implementing features like this, and raising awareness among more people that these features exist is one way we can face the issues.”

While it may feel counterintuitive that a video game company would work to eliminate video game addiction, it’s worth mentioning that Nintendo has also worked on quality of life products like Wii Fit in the past, along with other software and hardware that encouraged gamers to go outside and do something active.

Are you happy to see the steps Nintendo is making to help combat this, or is it infringing on kids to indulge in their hobbies as much as we did when we were young? I know in middle school I could go eight to 10 hours, easy, and grew frustrated when I was tossed outside. Let us know your own experiences in the comments!
