Nintendo Switch Online Coming Soon

Better late than never. In September Nintendo Switch will join the world of paid internet subscriptions akin to Sony Plus and Xbox Live. Features such as cloud saves, access to classic NES games, and online play will come to life in the second half of September.

Pricing will start at $4 a month and can be purchased in one, three, or 12 month subscriptions. Discounts are offered for buying three and 12 month subscriptions at $8 and $20 respectively. There is also a family 12 month option for $34.99 that will serve up to eight accounts. Be aware that Switch owners do not automatically enroll when the service launches next month

Cloud saves, for those that don’t know, allow a player to access their games progress on another device than their own. This can be helpful in the case of a damaged unit being replaced with a new one, or when someone forgets their console at home and borrows a friends who has the same game.

Some of the NES games included with the service are Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, Balloon Fight, The Legend of Zelda, and others.

As for online gaming we know that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Mario Tennis Aces, and others will be included and that some other games may vary.

There are many online features the Switch already has that will not be affected. These include registering and managing friends, parental controls, and sharing screenshots on social media. System updates and Switch News will also remain free of the requirement to subscribe.

This writer has been a PC gamer since the mid 1990s and balks at online subscriptions for gaming. Usually PC games do not need an individual paid subscription to take advantage of online benefits such as World of Tanks, Team Fortress 2, or Star Craft II. Full disclosure though, I do have a PlayStation Plus subscription. Mostly for the free games offered. That being said, I am a big fan of classic and retro-gaming and could see myself getting the Nintendo Switch Online subscription to take advantage of the classic NES games.
