Original Game Of Thrones Pilot Was ‘Unbelievably Bad’ Says Actor

The road to the big or small screen isn’t always linear. Sometimes, it requires a whole lot of elbow grease and reworks to get something where it needs to be to become a mammoth hit. In the case of some shows, it’s not infrequent that a pilot of a show is filmed, only for it to get reworked heavily before it reaches audiences. Such was the case with The Big Bang Theory, which featured a completely different third lead, and such is the case with Game of Thrones, which among other changes, featured a completely different actress playing Daenerys Targaryen.

In anticipation of the final season of Game of Thrones, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau reflected on that very pilot while speaking to James Corden on the Late Late Show…and apparently it wasn’t very good. I mean, given that the studio thought it worth to rework it, you can imagine it wasn’t good enough, but apparently, it was entertainingly awful.

“There was this pilot that was — 95% was reshot,” Coster-Waldau said. “And we sat down, the original cast with Dan and David — the two creators — and they showed this thing to us and it was unbelievably bad. It was absolutely amazing to see. there’s no reason we’re sitting here talking about this today, no one should have picked that up.”

“But there was one guy, Richard Plepler, who was the CEO of HBO, who was like apparently the only one who went like, ‘This is great! Let’s do it!’ And then we did it, and we reshot. But it just goes to so you, you really, you never know.”

You could’ve fooled me. I’m still shocked that the show has become the cultural phenomenon it is. Not that it’s a bad series, but given how slow and meditative its pacing is early on, the fact that mainstream non-geeks were able to latch onto it as they did is incredibly surprising for me. Even as a fan of the show, I was only able to hang onto it because I’d read the books before I dove into the series. I can’t imagine even trying to dive in without having read them.

What do you think of Coster-Waldau’s comments? Do you think HBO should release that original pilot? Let us know down below!
