Original Voice of Iago, Gilbert Gottfried Doesn’t Seem Too Happy With Studio’s Choice

Disney Studios has had a lot of success re-making some of our favorite animated classics like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Maleficent and The Jungle Book. This year Disney Studios has three offerings Dumbo, The Lion King and Aladdin. With all these films originally made in the 90’s you would think that it would be tough to get a lot of the nostalgic voices back for the re-makes. But that was not the case with Lion King as we are getting James Earl Jones’ iconic deep voice back to voice Simba’s father, Mufasa.

Today it was revealed that Alan Tudyk would be voicing Iago, Jafar’s loyal parrot in Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin. Back in 1992 when the original animated film was released, Iago was voiced by Gilbert Gottfried. Many fans had been hoping that they would re-cast Gottfriend to reprise his voice as Iago but as we can see that did not happen. Fans are not the only one’s disappointed. It seems that Gottfried is not very happy about the characters new voice in the live-action remake.

Some fans took their displeasure to Twitter, where many were asking why Gottfried had been overlooked for the role. No matter who was cast you are always going to get a group of people that aren’t satisfied with the decision. What makes some of these tweets interesting is that some of these have all been retweeted by Gottfried, giving us all the impression that he is also frustrated with Disney Studio’s decision.

GILBERT GOTTFRIED RETWEETS

I want to be upset with this decision as well, but I am a fan of Tudyk and don’t mind the casting choice. This decision shouldn’t be a surprise as only the above mentioned Jones has been cast to reprise their role from a classic Disney film. So far casting for these re-makes has not been too bad, as much hate as people are giving Will Smith so far, I’ll wait until I see the film to give my opinion.

Ritchie is directing Aladdin based off of a script by John August and Vanessa Taylor. The film is being produced by August and Ritchie with Dan Lin. Jonathan Eirich is serving as an executive producer with Marc Platt and Christ Montan consulting for the project.

Disney’s Aladdin will be summoned into theaters May 24th, 2019.
