Oscars Could Go Hostless Again Next Year

The Oscars made a good number of headlines this year leading up to the show’s airing, and it wasn’t necessarily for a great reason. They were originally going to have Kevin Hart host, but after a series of tweets from the comedian came to light and he stepped down, they were strapped for a host. From the sound of it, it was a job that no one really wanted, so they opted to go for the hostless route for this year’s ceremony. The result? Against all expectations, it was relatively well-received, and showed an uptick in ratings from last year.

With that experience behind them, once can’t help but wonder what approach they’ll be taking next year. Now that they have an idea of what not to do to their hosts…perhaps they can figure out a way to make one stick? Well, maybe not. Given how well things turned out for them, it looks like they are hoping to try and continue the trajectory they started in this past year’s ceremony, as ABC Chief Karey Burke revealed to THR in an interview.

“We’re having those conversations with the Academy right now,” Burke told the outlet. “We are extremely happy with how the show went. Odds are you’ll see us repeating what we consider to be a successful formula.”

Okay, so what was it about last year’s show that made it a winning formula for them? Here’s what he had to say.

“Three movies up for best picture made over $200 million. They deserve a lot of the credit. And so many people tuned in to see Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper sing. Every time that clip is watched, it’s got the ABC bug in the corner. I love that. It’s going to be in every promo reel I do. People tuned in expecting to see a train wreck and got a good show instead.”

So, between the big movies being nominated and the song performance, it seems like they at least have an idea of what works. The only problem is that she has very little control over what movies get nominated, and it’s not every day that a cultural sensation like A Star is Born warrants a performance like Lady Gaga’s and Bradley Cooper’s? But, they managed to pull it all off, so more power to them.

Did you like this year’s ceremony? If so, what were some of the highlights?
