Oscars: Kevin Feige Wants Ryan Coogler To Accept Best Picture Award If Black Panther Wins

Black Panther was a great film and as such it has been nominated for seven Academy Awards, including the coveted Best Picture award. This is a first for a comic book movie, and the nomination alone is a great precedent as it could lead to other popular films getting nominated and winning. If the movie does win the big prize it will be producer Kevin Feige’s name in the envelope and he would be the expected recipient on stage. However, in a recent interview with EW the MCU mastermind said he would prefer someone else get on stage:

“He (Ryan Coogler) will have no choice. Without question — because it is Ryan’s film, and it is Ryan’s achievement. It would be a must. I would ask him, very kindly, to be there. To be honest with you, I think the cast would [take care of] that for me, They would pick him up and carry him up onto that stage.”

None of the nominations the movie received would result in a trophy in Coolger’s hands. Many people have pointed out that the Best Picture nomination seems like a stunt for the Oscars as the movie didn’t get a director, actor/actress, or writing nomination. Usually Best Picture nominees will have one of those as well. The Oscars also wanted to add the category of Popular Film to honor movies that don’t usually get nominations, like CBMs, but push back from movie lovers was fast and loud. I agree with the sentiment that just because a film is popular and mainstream doesn’t make it any less deserving of the big awards.
