Oscars: New Video Delves Into The Dirty Inner Workings Of The Best Picture Race Process

Awards season is upon us here in the filmsphere. Earlier this morning, we reported on the Academy Awards officially selecting their nominations for this year’s ceremony, which is set to go down on February 22, 2019. But, contrary to popular belief, as much weight as the Oscars seem to carry, there is a lot of shady behind-the-scenes stuff that goes on for studios to snag these awards.

In a new video from YouTuber Philip DeFranco, they guide us through the labyrinth that is the Best Picture nominations. But they don’t just walk through what they’ve been able to piece together about the process, but actually speak to Deadline awards columnist Pete Hammond and awards editor Tim Gray of Variety.

“I feel like everything the general public knows about the Oscar race is wrong,” Gray said in the video. “People seem genuinely shocked and outraged that anyone would campaign for an Oscar.”

Sure, plenty of us in the know realize this, but the reality is most people don’t realize the millions of dollars studios put into campaigning their films in hopes of getting it in front of eyes so that voters could select them for the coveted prize. If you’ve lived in Los Angeles, you’ve probably seen the “For Your Consideration” posters plastered around town, but to most other people, it’s such an odd thing.

The video then digs into the dirtier parts of the process, which could include a “whisper campaign,” where a potential frontrunner is secretly bad-talked in hopes that it won’t win. This year, the big movie that seems to be the victim of a whisper campaign is Bohemian Rhapsody, with people complaining it’s not “gay enough” and doesn’t dig deep enough into the darker aspects of Queen.

It’s a pretty cool video, and if you’re interested in some other dark inner workings of the process, our own Nick Doll had a couple enlightening stories in the most recent episode of Los Fanboys regarding a high-profile writer in Hollywood that may be of interest to you.
